The course is an introduction to the meaning of forest industry to Finland. The course includes types of forest, annual growth of forest, various methods of felling and how to obtain raw material for a cabinet maker. Students learn to identify the Finnish wood species and the most commonly used imported hardwood.                             -External identification: leaves, branches, roots, growth habit and habitat.                                                                                         -Identification by using the structural and sensory features of raw wood material.                                                                                        -The structure of cells of the raw wood material will be learned through the effects caused by the changes of the moisture of wood and the temperature variation of the surrounding air, or in other words, through the stretching and contracting of wood.                                                                                                   -The course presents a general introduction to the most common structures, and joints and the principles of dimensioning them.
